This makes the audience feel like they’re present, and in the action. Many action-oriented directors today prefer to employ “shaky cam” and tight close angles, to convey an element of franticness and claustrophobia during fight scenes. They preferred a much simpler and more elegant approach to shooting action scenes. The Wachowskis used as little stunt double shots as possible, preferring to instead train and film the actual actors performing martial arts fight choreography. Many unseen and unattempted filmmaking techniques were pioneered and popularized by this film, leading to its relevancy today. The Matrix, directed and written by the Wachowskis, was released in 1999. This led me “tumbling down the rabbit hole” ( The Matrix). As I grew older, and during subsequent viewings, I started to recognize the sheer amount of content and technique hidden underneath all of the kung fu and guns. I remember watching it while I was young, and being captivated by the flashy action and music. When presented with the option to review any film, the obvious choice for me is the film that got me started down the path of a cinephile The Matrix.
